Plot synopsis :

Frustrated writer Jack Torrance takes a job as the winter caretaker at the ominous, mountain-locked Overlook Hotel so that he can write in peace. When he arrives there with his wife and son, they learn that the previous caretaker had gone mad. Slowly Jack becomes possessed by the evil, demonic presence in the hotel.

My opinion :

We discover in this film an harrowing universe, and a Jack Nicholson absolutely frightning. The atmosphere is, for me, totally absorbing, and we are eager to know what could happen after !! Morever, I like the contrast between the chalet and the snow.
Snow which reminds me innocence, Christmas, happy days, and on the other hand, the violence of the scenes we see all along the film.
Personnaly, I recommend it to every lover of this kind of movie.

We can notice that Stephen King, who was unhappy about this adaptation, decided later to direct his own adaptation of his writings.

Re: The Shining

this movie is simply awsome.
this is Jack Nicholson's best performance on screen, I think. the thrill is based on a very quiet atmosphere, in a peaceful hotel. but such calm holds a very frightening potential that releases slowly as one sees the main character become crazy...
to my mind, it's also the best Stanley Kubrick, with impressive choices for cameras angles and astonishing scenes.
brilliant.

Re: The Shining

I saw the movie a few years ago and I thought it was really good, until I read the book. To me, the book is much better, but movies of Stephen King books are usually a little off, right? tongue There's another version of the movie though, it's kind of cheesy >.< but it follows the book better.

Still an ok movie though wink

Re: The Shining

Jack Nicholson is creeeeeepy in this movie.  He's actually creepy in a lot of movies, perhaps unintentionally.  The Shining is a pretty good movie, but it doesn't get too exciting until the end.  Sea Urchin is right...the other version of the movie is pretty cheesy.

Re: The Shining

This is one of the best  horror movies I've ever seen. Jack is very good actor it may be his best role. I didn't know that Stephen King has written this. I quess that explains its quality. He is the best horror writer of all times.
